Employee is suspected of committing acid leak at IJsselland Hospital
A 25-year-old employee of the IJsselland Hospital in Capelle aan den IJssel will stay in prison for longer. He caused an acid leak in a warehouse in the hospital on Thursday. The Public Prosecution Service suspects the employee of a conscious act. He was sent to the court this afternoon and is accused of attempted murder and / or killing. The Judge-Commissioner extended his arrest by two weeks.
The man who worked as a temporary worker would have had a disinfectant leaked into the hospital's warehouse. Later that day he was arrested at Gouda.
Intensive care
Two hospital staff had to be included in the intensive care with respiratory problems. Other people also had complaints and had to be treated. The IJsselland Hospital was closed for hours. One injured is still on the intensive care, says a hospital spokesman.
More victims due to industrial accidents in the Netherlands
By accidents at Dutch companies last year seventy people died. "Nineteen victims more than a year earlier," concluded Inspector General Marc Kuipers of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment published in the SZW's SZW Annual Report. The total number of occupational accidents last year was 2.500: 14 percent more than a year earlier.
"That's worrying," concludes Kuipers. "Not only because of growth, but also because of the figures that show only a part of the truth: almost half of the reported work accidents were not reported last year."
The inspector-general mentions that "a scandalous number". According to Kuipers, the causes of accidents are varied. "Profits go above safety, temporary workers do not get enough instructions or speak and understand Dutch insufficiently," he says. According to the inspector-general, government and industry have the moral obligation to learn from fatal accidents.
Temporary workers
The annual report also shows that temporary workers are significantly more at risk than employees in permanent employment. The chance of an accident is even twice as high for temporary workers. "This was evidenced by earlier research," added the inspection.
Employees in some industries also run an increased risk. "In construction, the most deadly victims have been registered for years," he said. "In 2016, sixteen victims died, in 2015 there were nine, in 2014 twenty and in 2013 25."
